Nico & Sarah

Nico & Sarah

After putting offers in on many houses and losing out on them, we decided to write a letter to a home that was not for sale. Sarah had a dream about this house many years ago while they were struggling with infertility, in the dream she was standing in front of the house holding a baby.

Sarah had a dream about this house many years ago...

We stepped out in faith and wrote them a letter asking if we could purchase their house and they said “yes!”. We moved in and 6 months later we found out we were pregnant after 9 years of infertility.

Our Story

Sarah was dating Nicos best friend in high school and kept saying “Hey we should hang out with your friend Nico, he’s funny”. Nico and Sarah reunited after high school and turns out the feeling was mutual. We got married in 2009 during the recession and had soon found out we would struggle to have children. After several fertility treatments we considered that door “closed”, and then a couple months later we were pleasantly surprised to find out we were pregnant with our miracle baby.

We love to laugh and have fun while equally engaging in good deep conversations that honor one another, yet challenge each other in areas we may need to grow in. We both work well as a team in and outside of our family life and help balance each other out.

Together, we love to hike, bike and go for nature walks.

Our Relaxation & Fun

We all seem to have a hobby for every season. Sarah loves to run and also plays on a soccer league all year around. Nico loves deer and turkey hunting. We also value the time we spend together with our daughter Piper and our German Shepherd, Arrow. Together, we love to hike, bike and go for nature walks.

In the warmer months we love camping, especially near Lake Michigan where we can go sightseeing, hiking or be in the quiet of nature. Piper loves art and also has had her chance at soccer, gymnastics and dance classes, we can’t wait to see what she seems to really enjoy most.

Our Family & Friends

Sarah’s family is large with 7 kids and though we are not all “physically” close geographically we still talk almost every day, whether it be on the phone or over text. We love to go visit my parents at their country home and go out for lunch or breakfast often. When we are all in town, it is a big celebration to be together again.

Nico’s family lives generally nearby. We are all close and get together often, especially for holidays. We keep each other updated on what is going on in our lives and always support each other. When we get together, we love to play games, cook together and play with all of the kids.

Our friends are also like family to us. Our friend group spans over many seasons of life, younger and older. We love the wisdom and encouragement we all offer each other. We know that we can talk to our friends about anything, and they will support us and pray for us.

Nico is very handy and made a lot of beautiful changes to our home over the last 6 years to make it really feel like "us".

Our Home & Neighborhood

We live in a cute small home where we like to decorate intentionally and minimally to create a calming environment. We love having a smaller home as it causes us to be very intentional with our space and our time with each other. Nico is very handy and made a lot of beautiful changes to our home over the last 6 years to make it really feel like “us”. We have plans to finish our basement hopefully in the very near future to create a playroom and extra living space.

We have a cute private fenced in yard with lots of room to run and play. Our neighborhood is very quiet, and all the neighbors love to help each other out and support each other. We live within walking distance to a park and bike trail where we spend a lot of our time, especially in the warmer months. We love to ride our bikes into the nearby small town and get ice cream and walk along the river.

Our Thoughts On...

Education

We preferer a non-traditional way of learning that is a “grow at your own pace” style. Though we know academics are important, we also know that each child may learn at a different pace and even a different style, so we want to make sure we are very attentive to each child’s unique needs and ways of learning.

Our daughter currently goes to a private Christian school that does a lot of hands-on learning outdoors through curiosity, which we love! There is a lot of one-on-one time offered to make sure each child is understanding the “subject” before moving on. It is also very Christ centered and we love seeing the way she grows in her love for Jesus even at school.

Correction & Discipline

We both feel that the goal is to teach a lesson to the child regarding their behavior and not just to punish. We don’t want our child to obey out of fear but out of trust and love for us. And gaining our trust and love is the first step for a good foundation for discipline.

We believe there is most likely an “unmet” need or expectation that is laying the groundwork for the behavior that needs to be understood and managed. We both strive to gain understanding to make sure our child is being heard and understood while also staying firm and having clear boundaries. We don’t often use timeouts, but usually “take a rest” where we will separate our child from the environment for a moment so we can reset and talk about the issue.

Our Faith Views

God is the center of our lives. We go to a large non-denominational church where we are very involved leading small groups, mentoring and teaching. Sarah is the author of two bible studies and hopes to write more in the future. Currently we both lead a young adult ministry at church together.

Sarah also teaches classes and works with the women’s ministry. Piper loves going to Sunday school, and we love hearing her come home and tell us bible stories in her own silly version. Everything we do, we aim to keep God at the center and honor God in all we do.

My job allows me to work with my hands and be creative.

Nico's Career

I like being able to work on unique projects for high end clients as well as leading a team of people to accomplish big tasks. My job allows me to work with my hands and be creative. I love being able to meet new people and see how satisfied they are with the work I have done in their home and business. I also love that I work with a lot of my close friends who are like family to us, most of us also attend church together. We keep each other accountable and encourage one another in and outside of work.

I work Monday-Friday during the day and will be home on evenings to be there with my family. My job is very flexible and values family first. I have always been able to work out my schedule to be home if I am needed during the day or if our home life needs extra attention. After immediate placement I plan on staying home for a week or two full time, or working less hours so I can be there as we transition and welcome a new child into our home.

Sarah's Career

My passion has recently shifted from running a photography business to being at home and focusing on being a mom and a wife, as I no longer wanted to balance both. I recently closed my photography business down so that I could put my full attention at home, aside from being part time counseling. I work as a Christian counselor with mostly youth. I really enjoy helping others see their true identity and worth, especially for those who have come from extra traumatic backgrounds.

In whatever work I do, whether it be at home or in ministry, I aim to share the truth of the Gospel and the love of Jesus. And I believe that my family is my first and greatest ministry.

I still plan on working one evening a week as a counselor but I will be home full time during the day and most evenings with our child(ren) and I really look forward to it. Sometimes I need “work days” to focus on church things, and in that case one of the Grandparents will watch our children or Nico will stay home.

I really enjoy helping others see their true identity and worth, especially for those who have come from extra traumatic backgrounds.

Nico

Year of Birth: 1988
Education: High school, some College, trade school
Occupation: Field Operations Manager
Family Background:

My family and I came over from the Netherlands when I was 2 years old. Most of my extended family is here and close by as well. We all love to cook unique Dutch foods when we are together for family gatherings. Though we all speak English, my family often loves to honor our ethnic background by conversing in the Dutch language when we are with each other. The grandparents especially love to share Dutch children’s songs with the kids.

I am the youngest of 3 kids and grew up in a traditional household, where mom stays home and dad goes to work. With all my family coming from overseas, we took comfort in being with each other and honoring our heritage.

As for family traditions, we love to get together for all holidays where we cook food and play games. We also love to camp together.

Sarah

Year of Birth: 1987
Education: High School, Some College, Ministry training
Occupation: Counselor/Discipler/Stay at home mom
Family Background:

My ethnic background comes from Northwestern Europe from what I am aware of. After being in foster home for a couple years, I was able to be adopted by my aunt and uncle when I was 10 years old. Being adopted, I was able to experience many aspects of family traditions. One of my favorites is when I joined my new adoptive family we would get together for Christmas, open up gifts, eat a lot of food and hug each other a lot-we’re really into hugs around here.

My Grandpa would read a story to children and also sing old Christmas hymns along with my Aunt and Uncle. Grandparents have always been a very special part of my life and I wish for the same for my own children.

We just want to say

We are so proud of you for making this difficult decision and hope we get to be a part of your story. For Sarah, being adopted was the greatest gift she could ever ask for, and we are honored that God has allowed us the chance to offer that gift to another child as well. Though we don’t know you, we cannot thank you enough for this opportunity to be able to support you in such a unique way. Through adoption we vow to honor you and your decision in your Child’s life in whatever way we can.
