Rob & Kelly

Hey you guys! (movie reference alert) Rob is a movie guru. I (Kelly) haven’t met anyone who enjoys movies more than him. It is really impressive that he can quote movie lines at times. I find watching movies enjoyable but throughout our years of marriage, I realize that there are a lot of movies Rob deems as “classics” that I have not seen. A few years ago we went to an ’80s themed murder mystery party.

Rob right away knew who we should dress up as Chunk and Sloth from the Goonies.

Rob right away knew who we should dress up as Chunk and Sloth from the Goonies. An ’80s classic movie that I have never seen. We watched the movie on a Friday night and enjoyed laughing together. Then the next day we went scouring thrift stores for bits and pieces of our costume. I have to admit, we had really great costumes and Rob ended up winning the award for Best Dressed at the party.

Our Story

We met on a crisp, cool, fall day in November of 2013 at a float building party. Some of the staff from the school that Kelly teaches at gathered together to build a float for the Battle Creek Christmas Parade. She was working on untangling Christmas lights with her first-grade teammate Sam when she met him. Rob came along with his mom to help work on building the float. His mom was a dean at her school.

They chatted for a few minutes untangling lights. Rob and his mom left at lunchtime to go pick up pizza for everyone. He asked her about Kelly and she told him to leave her teachers alone. Needless to say, Rob didn’t listen to his mom and later that night found Kelly on Facebook and sent her a message. We went out to dinner a few times.

We didn’t start seriously dating until May of 2014 when we declared we were in a relationship with each other on Facebook. I mean it’s not official until it’s Facebook official right? On March 6, 2015, we tied on the knot in a small ceremony. Then in May of 2015, we went to the Humane Society and got our dog Miggy.

During football season we have people over to watch the game on the big screen in the garage.

Our Relaxation & Fun

We enjoy spending time with each other and laughing together. We both have fun with our dog Miggy. He is seven years old and is a rescue dog. Miggy loves it when we take him for car rides, walks, or throw the ball. Rob is a huge University of Michigan fan and Kelly has become one too. We go to Michigan football games together. We have a 3 car garage that is Rob’s man cave.

During football season we have people over to watch the game on the big screen in the garage. Everyone brings a dish to pass and Rob enjoys grilling and smoking meat for everyone. We enjoy traveling too and like to plan and save for special vacations. For our honeymoon, we went to Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida, and then went on a 3-day cruise in the Bahamas.

Kelly’s sister got married in Las Vegas so in March of 2019 we got to plan a short trip to Vegas. One of the days we were there we went on a bus tour to the Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon. Then we went on a huge family vacation with Rob’s mom and stepdad to Orlando, Florida. We all went to Magic Kingdom together for the day.

We do have separate interests as well that you can find us doing. Rob enjoys golfing, pickleball, ice fishing, and hunting. Kelly enjoys reading, shopping, and going out for coffee with friends.

Our Family & Friends

We are very close to our families. We are fortunate that both of our families live close to us and we see each other often. Kelly’s parents, sister, and her family live in Battle Creek only a few minutes away. Kelly’s sister and her husband have a 6-month-old son named Ewan. We enjoy going to visit and getting to hold Ewan. Kelly’s parents come over during the day to let Miggy out when we are at work.

Rob’s mom and stepdad live just outside of Battle Creek and his dad and stepmom live about 30 minutes away. One of Rob’s sisters lives in the portage area with her two children. We love spending time with them and getting to be Aunt Kelly and Uncle Bobert. We have fun taking them to the movies, the zoo or just having them over to spend the night at our house. We enjoy going over to Rob’s mom and stepdad’s house.

Miggy our dog gets to come along too. We have fun playing corn hole together. Often times Rob’s sister and her kids are over too and they love to throw the ball for Miggy. We always get together to celebrate birthdays and holidays. With Rob’s larger blended family that often means several Christmas celebrations and we absolutely love it!

We have some wonderful friends that we enjoy spending time with. We get together to play games or go out to dinner. They are people that we can always count on. Many of our wonderful family and friends have donated their time and items for 2 garage sales we had over the summer to help raise funds for adoption costs. We are definitely blessed with some amazing people in our lives.

On a nice day, you will often see people walking their dogs, going on family walks, or riding bikes.

Our Home & Neighborhood

Our neighborhood is suburban. We live in the city of Springfield which is in the middle of the larger city Battle Creek. It’s quiet and we have some children that live in our neighborhood. On a nice day, you will often see people walking their dogs, going on family walks, or riding bikes. Right down the street, there is a park with a huge playground structure, picnic tables, and basketball courts.

Our home is a clean 2-bedroom, 1 bathroom home. One of the bedrooms has already been transformed into a gender-neutral nursery. We have already had some family members give us clothes, bedding, and toys for the baby. The school I (Kelly) teach at is 5 minutes down the road and is the school that our child will be attending. It is a K-8 charter school and is very diverse.

This is our starter home. We have made some wonderful memories here with each other, our dog Miggy, and look forward to the memories we will make with our baby in this house. However, it is small and in five years or so we see ourselves moving into a larger house with some more property. We still plan on living in the Battle Creek area.

Our Thoughts On...

Education

Education is important to both of us. We believe that education happens at home and at school. As parents, it is our responsibility to teach our child manners and right from wrong. When our child is ready for school they will attend the charter school that Kelly teaches at. The school has an amazing moral focus curriculum and the entire staff at the school is there to help students succeed.

We will help our child with school work and always encourage them to do their best. Our child will have access to lots of books and educational toys. When our child shows interest in learning about new things, playing an instrument, or participating in a sport we will find ways to encourage and support their interests.

Correction & Discipline

We believe that a child will thrive best in a home that is loving, has clear rules, and routines. Kids are naturally going to make mistakes. As parents we want our child to learn from their mistakes and make good choices in life. We will follow the 1-2-3 Magic discipline method for correcting unwanted behavior. We will utilize age appropriate time outs and loss of privileges as negative consequences. We will also encourage good behaviors by using positive reinforcement.

Our Faith Views

We are Christians and our faith is really important to us. Rob and I strive to live out the values of the Christian faith such as loving others, helping those in need, being honest, and respecting everyone. We are currently sponsoring a child named Lina in Colombia through Compassion International. We write each other letters often. Our monthly sponsorship helps her receive medical care, education, and learn more about God through a partnership with a local church.

We attend a small Wesleyan church. We believe in one God, who is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and the Savior of all who put their faith in Him alone for eternal life. We work on growing stronger in our faith daily through prayer and reading the Bible. We look forward to helping our child develop a relationship with God through learning Bible stories, singing songs, and prayer.

It is a joy and privilege to do what I love...

Robert's Career

I am a graphic designer for a sign company in Climax, MI. Projects are led by me through design and artwork. It is a joy and privilege to do what I love for a company that thrives in the sign industry. I also do freelance design work for friends and family.

I plan on taking a week off of work after placement. I look forward to this time with our newborn. Although I would love to spend more time at home, I know of the importance of providing for my family. Unfortunately, my company doesn’t offer paternity leave, so I will need to go back to work after the week is finished. We will find a licensed child care center and plan on alternating drop-offs and pick-ups.

Kelly's Career

I am a full-time at-risk math teacher at Endeavor Charter Academy. I work with kindergarten through fourth-grade students to help them develop their math skills in a small group setting. Prior to starting this new teaching role this year, I taught first grade for 12 years.

I am so happy to be back teaching in person after teaching first grade virtually last year due to Covid. I love seeing the excitement on a child’s face when they are able to understand a new concept. I couldn’t imagine having any other job.

I plan on taking at least 6 weeks of maternity leave and I can take up to 12 weeks if needed. After my maternity leave, I will go back to teaching full-time. Since I am a teacher, I will have summers and holidays off. We will find a licensed child care center and plan on alternating drop-offs and pick-ups.

Education: Bachelors of Applied Science in Graphic Design
Occupation: Graphic Designer
Family Background:

My dad’s side of the family is from Germany and England. My mom’s side of the family is from Romania and Canada. As a child, I remember going with my mom to visit Nasha, my mom’s aunt, every few months. She was from Romania. She would cook traditional meals from Romania with my mom. To this day we still enjoy following her recipe for galumpkis (cabbage rolls).

The guys on my dad’s side of the family participate in an annual deer camp tradition. My grandpa and great uncles started this tradition over 50 years ago. They built 2 cabins in Luther, MI. We enjoy bonding together, hearing family stories, and hunting.

Year of Birth: 1984
Education: Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education and Master’s of Education in Reading
Occupation: At Risk Math Teacher
Family Background:

All of the ancestors from my mom’s side of the family immigrated to the United States from England and Ireland and settled in Battle Creek. The ancestors from her dad’s side of the family immigrated to the United States from England and Germany. As a child, we would often go “up north” to Mackinaw every summer. One of my favorite memories was when we bicycled around Mackinaw Island on tandem bikes as a family.

My dad and I shared a tandem bicycle. It was fun because I rode on the back and didn’t always pedal, but I enjoyed the ride. Growing up I was fortunate to have my great grandparents and grandparents living in Battle Creek too. On Fridays in elementary school, my great grandparents would pick my sister and me up from school and take us out to McDonald’s for dinner.

My grandma and grandpa would have us over to spend the night on the weekends. Spending time with family is something that I still cherish today. My parents, my sister, and her family live in Battle Creek a few minutes away from us.
