Seth & Sally

If we could describe ourselves in three things they would be:
1. We’ve been in love for 20 years, and we enjoy doing everything together.
2. We’re surrounded by a large community of loving family and friends (seriously, we have 27 nieces and nephews)
3. We love adventure (whether it’s traveling, trying new things, hobbies, etc.)

When we moved into our neighborhood a few years ago, we became friends with a couple nearby who had a tandem bike. Sally’s family had one when she was a kid so she loved the idea of getting one.

We immediately scoured Craigslist and bought a tandem so we could ride together. If a bike with two people on it turns heads, two tandem bikes in a row definitely get looks.

We hatched a plan with our friends to do a tandem bike progressive dinner. We made a full day of it, biking to various restaurants eating something at each spot, stopping for coffee/tea, afternoon ice cream, a frisbee golf intermission, and ending with BBQ.

Our friends left us at our house around midnight, and it was a really fun day that we thought couldn’t be more perfect.

But the next morning, we got a text from our friends (she was a little over 8 months pregnant) with a picture of them holding their baby. She had gone into labor a couple hours after they left our house!

It made a perfect day even more perfect and is one of our favorite memories.

Our Story

We were friends in college, and Seth was helping me study for a Mass Media Law exam. After we made it through my flashcards, I said “One more. Ask me anything.” “Anything?” he said. “Are you free Friday night?”

We started dating and five years later on a cold February night, Seth proposed. We’ve been married for 15 years and fall more in love every day.

We’ve always enjoyed spending time together, and Seth’s spontaneity is a perfect balance to Sally’s planning skills. Seth is creative, spontaneous, inventive, curious, good at problem solving, and has a good sense of humor.

Our nieces and nephews love him because he’s quick to join in whatever fun they’re having. He’s an excellent artist and does fun drawings and makes up silly stories for the kids.

Sally is dependable, easy going, a good listener, well-organized, curious, loves to laugh and enjoys a good mystery.

She is most fulfilled when helping others and was a child life volunteer at a children’s hospital for three years, and an ESL tutor for two years. She’s always up for a Mario Kart race or playing a board game.

Our Relaxation & Fun

We love hanging out with people and are always up for an impromptu get together. We’ve hosted mystery dinners, costume parties, and backyard gatherings.

We try to spend a lot of time at the beach in the summer, and we enjoy biking downtown on our tandem bike or along the White Pine Trail. Many summer evenings include a walk to get ice cream!

We also enjoy creating things, and hanging out with friends sometimes results in the invention of a new game.

Sally enjoys sewing and has made dresses, aprons, and bags. She also enjoys drawing and writing letters so she sometimes sends her nieces a sketch and a joke, hoping to brighten their day.

Seth enjoys designing, drawing, and a good pun. Art is naturally a part of our life, and we hope that it will be a fun part of our child’s life.

We also enjoy traveling and have been to Puerto Rico (one of our favorite places to visit!), Australia, Haiti, Russia, the Philippines, Peru, and various cities in the states. We also enjoy trying new foods, camping, and going to the gym together.

Our Family & Friends

We’re blessed to have loving and supportive families who are excited for us as we’re on this adoption journey. We’re from Ohio but moved to Grand Rapids 15 years ago, and we visit Ohio often for family camping trips, vacations, holidays, and to celebrate family milestones.

We both come from large families, and we have 27 nieces and nephews who are excited to have another cousin!

In addition to friendships we made while living in Ohio, we’ve met a lot of wonderful people since we moved to Grand Rapids. We have a fun, supportive group of friends, and many of them have children.

We get together often, either sharing a meal, having a game night, riding bikes, camping, or going to the beach. We’re also part of a neighborhood group that hangs out one evening each month, and we’ve met a lot of other wonderful families this way. Many of them have children or are currently expecting.

And one of our favorite things to do is travel to visit our friends who moved to other cities.

Our Home & Neighborhood

We live in a 3-bedroom home in a quiet neighborhood in Grand Rapids. We’re within walking distance of some great parks, a swimming pool, biking trails, a splash pad, ice cream stands, and restaurants.

One of our favorite things to do on a summer evening is meet up with friends and walk to get ice cream.

Our Views

We believe that we should treat others the way we want to be treated — with love, generosity, kindness, and respect. We were both raised in Christian homes with strong moral and ethical beliefs.

We don’t currently attend church, but we have a strong community of friends who help and support each other.

Education is one of the most important things a child should have access to. We both have Bachelor’s degrees and would encourage our child to pursue a college education.

We also want our child to know that there’s so much learning that can happen outside of a classroom through conversations with people who are different from them, through trips to museums, by trying new things (and sometimes failing), and by traveling and visiting other cultures.

Learning the fundamentals – reading, writing, and math – is a necessary foundation along with learning how to think critically, how to confidently interact with others, and how to be resilient.

We resonated with the Love & Logic approach of parenting that uses positive parenting and teaching techniques to build healthy relationships with kids. It’s important that a child is genuinely encouraged and positively reinforced for good behavior or when they make good choices.

We believe that love is the basis for effective parenting and discipline, and want to raise children to be loving, responsible, confident and self-motivated, and we believe these are learned practices.

We hope that if we can teach a child to make good decisions when they’re young, they will be confident in making bigger decisions as they get older.

As someone who has loved to draw my entire life and build with Legos, becoming a designer has been a great fit.

Seth's Career

I’m a self-employed graphic designer and have a studio downtown in Grand Rapids. After designing at several companies, my studio was launched in 2010.

My career has included identity design, retail display, product design, packaging, advertisements, books, film, web and interactive media. As someone who has loved to draw my entire life and build with legos, becoming a designer has been a great fit.

We will take time off to bond with the baby after placement, and we plan to use a licensed daycare when my leave ends.

Sally's Career

I’m the studio manager at a design studio, and I’m blessed to work with inspiring and skilled designers and developers who have an appreciation for art and design.

We work on some really fun projects, and my detail-oriented personality finds pleasure in helping to keep projects on track. I’ve been able to attend some great events and have met some of my closest friends through design.

We just want to say

Thank you for taking the time to learn more about us. We hope you find peace while making this difficult decision, whether or not adoption becomes a part of your story.

We’re looking forward to becoming parents and providing a safe and stable, loving home filled with laughter and fun. We value education and experiences and can’t wait to open the world up to a child, whether it’s through a bedtime story, or on a walk through the neighborhood, or at a museum in Chicago, or a hike through the red rocks of Arizona.

We know parenting is a great responsibility, and we would work hard to give your child a foundation so he or she can become who they want be.
